Description

So, you think you know Maine? Think again It's not just the woods, waters, mountains, lobsters and lighthouses that define Maine. From Kittery to Eastport, from Fort Kent to Monhegan, Maine is home to natural wonders, quirky characters, remarkable inventors, and haunting ghosts and legends. Whether it's Moxie Nerve Food, the North American Wife Carrying Competition, UFO abductions along the Allagash, or Kathadin's role in creating Bambi, this book by long-time journalist Earl Brechlin celebrates all that makes the state unique-both real and imagined. It not only recognizes the historical giants of Maine and its natural beauty, but brings to life the myths, legends, truths, and tall tales that have been shared around Maine's campfires for generations.

About the Author

Earl Brechlin, a long-time Maine journalist, has written several nonfiction books featuring Maine, including hiking guides and Forever Yours, Bar Harbor, a book of antique postcard images. After graduating from the University of Maine, Brechlin moved to Mount Desert Island where he worked as an island gardener. After first taking a job in the print shop, he soon rose to serve as editor of The Bar Harbor Times for nearly 20 years and was then founding editor of the Mount Desert Islander in 2001. Brechlin, now communications director for Friends of Acadia, is also a registered Maine Guide, a model railroad enthusiast, and sometimes attends comic book conventions to tout his Ancient Alien Expert business, offering interested parties potential degrees in Ancient Astronaut Theory, Cryptozoology, Zombie Survival, and Middle Earth History. He lives in Bar Harbor with his wife Roxie, a retired kindergarten teacher
